Johns Hopkins CTY Talent Search

CTY talent searches assess and identify high performing students by administering out-of-level tests. The talent search is open to students who have scored in the 95th-99th percentile on any reasoning portion (mathematics or verbal) on a state or nationally-normed achievement.

Qualified children in grades 2nd-6th are administered the SCAT assessment. Successful scores vary by grade level. Talented 7th and 8th graders take the SAT or ACT. Talent search applications are accepted in the fall. SCAT tests administration proceeds from February through June. SAT and ACT tests are administered December through February. All tests are administered at various U.S. and international locations.

CTY’s Spatial Battery Test (SBT) provides an alternate means of CTY candidacy targeted to spatially gifted learners often undetected by standard achievement tests. Gifted students skilled at puzzle manipulation, visuospatial reasoning, and systems organization should inquire about SBT.

Benefits of talent search include identification of unidentified strengths, recognition, family support services, scholarship eligibility, and access to specialized summer gifted programs and distance learning opportunities.

Johns Hopkins CTY Summer Programs

CTY offers summer learning stateside and abroad for gifted students in grades 2-12. The SCAT test is required for eligibility. Gifted students in 2nd-4th grade participate in 3-week summer day camps while 5th and 6th graders attend a residential program. Older students can participate in CTY or CAA residential courses, Civic Leadership Institute, programs in China, Mexico, and Spain.

The CTY Middlebury-Monterey Language Immersion program is open to 6th-9th grade gifted learners. Language Immersion is a four -week residential program focusing on five essential areas of language acquisition- reading, speaking, writing, listening, and cultural awareness. Spanish, French, Arabic, and Chinese are four of the current language selections.

Johns Hopkins CTY On-line Distance Education

CTYOnline serves gifted students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Challenging distance learning courses allow gifted students to acquire knowledge at an accelerated pace in their areas of interest. Some schools will allow gifted learners to complete CTYOnline courses for independent study credits. Subjects range from mathematics, science, and language arts to psychology, foreign language, and computer programming. CTY faculty provide evaluation, feedback, and support. A diversity of achievement test measures garner eligibility, including qualifying SCAT, ACT, SAT, WISC-IV, and CogAT scores. Applications are accepted year round.

Johns Hopkins CTY Family Programs

CTY Family Programs are open to all talent search participants, regardless of test scores. These courses provide academic enrichment to develop lifelong learners. One day, overnight, and weekend exposures include trips to museums, zoos, science centers, and laboratories.

Johns Hopkins CTY Field Studies and International Programs

Older CTY students (5th-12th grades) participate in extended field studies and travel abroad programs such as: Tanzania for Families, The Mystic of China, Colorado Dinosaur Discovery, and Art Treasures of Italy.

Johns Hopkins CTY Diagnostics and Counseling

CTY participants have full use of Diagnostic and Counseling Center services including career counseling, psycho-educational evaluation, achievement assessments, and school consultation. If your gifted child is considering acceleration, underachieving, struggling socially, or twice exceptional, CTY counselors are indispensable.

Johns Hopkins CTY Imagine Magazine and Cogito.org

Printed five times a year, each issue profiles prospective colleges, careers, and enrichment opportunities organized around a theme. Recent topical foci include We the People, Beyond Planet Earth, and Mind & Body. CTY students broaden their horizons at discounted subscription rates.
